UV insect killers are a practical solution for homes, hospitality venues, shops, hotels and business premises. They work quietly, without chemicals or unpleasant odours, and attract flying insects with light they find hard to resist.
However, not every unit is right for every space. Before you buy, it is worth checking how large an area the unit covers, how it catches insects, where it will be installed and how easy it is to maintain.
Room size and unit power
For each model, manufacturers state the area the unit can cover. This figure depends on the power and number of UV tubes, but also on how open and brightly lit the space is and how much it is divided into smaller sections. An undersized unit will not attract insects from every part of the space, while an oversized one in a small room wastes energy.
In larger spaces, such as restaurant kitchens, warehouses or shops, it is often better to install two or more smaller units than one large one. That way every zone where insects appear is covered and the protection is evenly spread.
Glue board or electric grid?
UV insect killers differ above all in the way they catch insects. Glue board units trap them on the board, quietly and without scattering insect fragments, which makes them the first choice for kitchens, food preparation areas and all premises that work to HACCP rules. The board also shows how many insects have been caught, making it easier to monitor insect activity on the premises.
Electric grid units kill insects with an electric shock and are suitable for warehouses, garages, covered terraces and other spaces where no food is prepared. For reception areas, rooms and guest areas, there are also decorative models that blend discreetly into the interior.
What else to consider before you buy
Besides room size and catching method, a few practical details are also worth checking when choosing a unit:
- shatter protection for the UV tubes, especially in food areas
- mounting method – wall, ceiling or freestanding
- energy consumption – LED versions generally use less
- how easily the glue boards and UV tubes can be replaced
- appearance and quiet operation in areas where guests spend time
Where the unit will stand also matters: between the entrance and the zone you are protecting, but positioned so that its light cannot be seen from outside, as it could otherwise attract insects from the surrounding area. Maintenance after purchase
Even the best unit needs regular maintenance. Glue boards are changed when they fill up or lose their stickiness, and UV tubes roughly once a year, ideally before the insect season begins. Over time, the tubes emit less UV radiation, even though they still appear to light up normally.
