Frequently Asked Questions
Insect control units use ultraviolet light to attract flying insects and then neutralise them with either an electrified grid or a glue board. The UV tubes attract flying insects by emitting UV light with a wavelength of 350 to 368 nm. The UV light emitted by the tubes is comparable to sunlight, and insects are naturally attracted to sources of light and heat.
It is very important to choose the right unit for the user's needs. Each unit has specific features in terms of the area it covers (which depends on the strength of the UV light it emits), its mounting method and its design. In general, zappers (electric grid units) are recommended for entrance areas with a large number of flying insects, while glue board units are recommended for sensitive areas where food is prepared, served and displayed. Entrances to premises often call for decorative units that provide discreet but highly effective insect protection. For help choosing the right unit for your needs, contact us.
Because these units work by attracting insects with UV light, it is very important that the UV light is visible from every corner of the room you want to protect. The unit is best placed at a height of at least 2 m above the floor, so that insects can see it as clearly as possible. It is very important to place the unit opposite points where natural light comes in, such as windows or doors. In large rooms, or rooms with several corners and obstacles, it is recommended to install two or more units to ensure complete protection against flying insects.
For the units to work effectively, they need regular maintenance. UV tubes have a service life of about 8,000 hours, so they should be replaced at least once a year, ideally before the start of the summer season. Electric grid units kill insects when they touch the grid, so you should use a voltage tester (neon screwdriver) to check that the grid is live.
Glue board units also use UV light to attract insects, but they kill them with a glue board, providing silent and discreet protection. For hygiene reasons, you should periodically check how much of the glue board is covered with insect remains. The quality of the glue board can significantly affect the unit's effectiveness. P+L units use GLUPAC™ glue boards with UV-resistant adhesive and a pheromone coating, which makes the unit more effective. However, glue boards remain effective for about thirty days, so they should be replaced once a month to ensure insects are reliably neutralised.
Insect control units should be placed in a suitable spot in the room, as described in the previous answer.
